Hi, I’m Maureen and I work as a product designer and design content creator. The Cursor Magazine is my online publication on design, workshop facilitation and career.
Past April I looked back on 4 years of creating and sharing design content online.
What started as a lockdown hobby snowballed into an Instagram community, opportunities to work brands I truly love, creating YouTube videos with a professional video team, a newsletter and a growing LinkedIn following.
Creating content is oftentimes a one-way street: I’m sending, you’re consuming. It’s hard to keep a feeling of familiarity and intimacy with you - my readers and people who follows my channels elsewhere. I’ve tried different formats throughout the years to get that intimate feeling back.
If you’ve been here with me since the beginning, you’ve probably seen me experiment and to that I can only say: thanks for sticking along.
From all the ways I share content online, the thing I enjoyed most are all the webinars and workshops I do. It’s an opportunity for me to get to know all of you better and learn together. So far I’ve created and hosted webinars for EdTech brands such as CareerFoundry, but never for my own community.
That’s about to change.
Launching soon: UX.Community
Behind the scenes I’m working on an exclusive, membership-based community that focusses on building an intimate, safe space for designers to connect and learn. I want this community to serve you, a place where you can learn things that actually serve your growth as a designer.
First, I want to answer some questions you might have.
Is this community paid or free?
This will be a paid community, with a one-time payment for lifetime access. Creating custom webinars, classes, organising hangouts and moderating community channels takes time and money. I’ve created and shared content for free for years and will continue to do. This is something that requires more time and costs that I’d like to cover.
I’m not sure yet how much the membership will cost, but what I can already tell you is that (for now) it will not be a subscription. Subscriptions are sneaky things that people forget about and the last thing I want is to drive up your monthly expenses.
To make sure this community is accessible to as many people as possible, I’m looking for ways to make sure those without a budget or members of minority groups can join too. If you have any ideas or examples of communities who do this well, please let me know!
Why should I join your community, if I already follow you elsewhere?
Let me start by saying that you should not feel obliged at all to join my community. I will continue to share content online for free on here, Instagram and LinkedIn.
This community is a great fit if you truly want to invest in growing as a designer and you’re looking for a community to motivate you, keep you accountable and learn together. The webinars and classes taught in this community will be tailored to your needs. The hangout sessions and design reviews session are made to review your work and talk about your challenges. To make the most of your membership, there is an expectation that you participate.
You can think of this community as some kind of online study group / accountability buddies.
Does this community replace online schools and bootcamps?
No, this community will not offer an extensive, guided curriculum like a course, bootcamp or university does. This community is no education replacement, but rather complements it by teaching you things you won’t learn in bootcamps and courses.
If you’re starting from 0 and you have no experience in UX design at all, I strongly recommend you find a learning path that fits you and use this community just as a way of networking and gathering feedback.
I’ve been in the field for years already, what’s the value of this community for me?
Surrounding myself by ‘newbies’ in the field has taught me so much. It makes me reflect on my own workflows, it keeps my perspective fresh and teaching and sharing knowledge is the best way to retain that knowledge. I hope you’ll find the same in my community.
Sounds interesting? Join the waitlist (it takes less than a minute to sign up!) and I’ll let you know when the community goes live:
