Hi, I’m Maureen and I work as a product designer and design content creator. The Cursor Magazine is my online publication on design, workshop facilitation and career.
These are my 4 favorite YouTube channels on design and building (online) products in the broadest sense. They’re not specifically focused on UX or product design, but nevertheless help me reflect on my work as a designer.
Enrico Tartarotti
If you’re working in tech and visit YouTube regularly, you might have already seen this man in the yellow beanie. I’ve discovered Enrico Tartarotti through his video analysis on Arc and quickly became a big fan. His videos give a much needed critical, well-thought out view on the tech companies and products we all “love” and use.
Linus Boman
Even though the focus of his videos lie on graphic design, I really like watching Linus Bomans videos. I really enjoy his typography breakdowns as I never had any formal education of typography. This video on the legacy of Microsoft’s typography is already 4 years old but still very interesting to watch. Though for this newsletter I picked something more fitting of this brat girl summer.
Modern MBA
The name might sound a bit boring to some of you but I promise this channel is a MUST for designers, even when its focus is not design. This channel teaches you about different business models in 45-60min case studies. The further I progress in my career, the more I realise how important it is to understand how business work.
Understanding how business make and lose money makes it easier for me to prioritise my work as a designer, manage expectations from stakeholders and make compromises.
Design Theory
John Muriello’s background lies in industrial design and you can see that in his videos, since they’re often focused on physical design objects. The video linked above is talks about objects that already found their ‘final form’ - something that I find really fascinating and teaches us an important lesson: design isn’t about reinventing the wheel.
What are your favorite design channels to watch on YouTube? Let me know in the comments! And to stay on theme - if you haven’t yet, I’d appreciate it if you would consider gently tapping that Subscribe button.
Thanks for sharing! I need to check them out. The Typographic Legacy of Microsoft is a classic one to watch.
