When I read the book The People vs. Tech by Jamie Bartlett a few years ago, it left a big impact on me. Jamie Bartlett argues that social media, big data and AI takes away the foundations of democracy by spreading misinformation, enabling surveilling and concentrating power in the hands of big tech companies.
I love this list! So important for these convos to happen especially now, among both tech + dem advocates -- tech π has always π beenπ political! To add to list, design justice, design after capitalism, civic technologists practice guide, work without the worker. (I do believe in tech that can strengthen democracy when we design for it so!!!!)
Itβs honestly going to get so much worse. Itβs difficult being a techie and designer and deal with the fact the industry is built on capitalism and further the oppressions of marginalized people. I gave up trying to work with companies and starting doing my own work and collaborating with other like-minded designers and developers.
